Advanced Structural Engineering Project 4 (U00431)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-4-CVASP

This course is project based. The project is based on the taught finite element analysis course. The brief includes appropriate starting references and students are required to study individually using the internet, the library and any other available source information to accomplish the specified task.

The course focuses on the use of linear elastic finite element analysis to study the stress patterns in a structural system with some complexity, involving conditions which cannot be easily study predicted using hand calculations. The analysis must not only be shown to be a satisfactory model for the problem, but the results must be interpreted in a satisfactory manner considering the limit state for which the structure is being designed. The student must thus display an understanding of the ways in which elastic analyses may be used as analogies or lower bound estimates for ultimate limit states which may not be elastic. The study must then be expanded to cover a range of wider issues for which the student is given little guidance. The student must demonstrate an insight into the full range of problems covered.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is intended to be undertaken largely by personal study. It requires students to research the subject area sufficiently to enable them to critically evaluate the results of finite element calculations and to identify their shortcomings.
