The Nature of Geography (U00409)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 9 ? Acronym : GEO-3-NATUREGEO This course examines the development of geography, understood as a formal discipline, as a set of contested discursive practices, and a situated knowledge. Attention is paid to recent debates on the nature of geographical knowledge, scientific methodology, and the role of theory and method in geography. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course has the following learning outcomes: to provide students with a grounding in philosophical and methodological issues relevant to physical and human geography; to familiarise students with the specific contexts of geographical knowledge production; to equip students with the analytical skills necessary to critically evaluate knowledge claims made in the physical and social sciences; to familiarise students with key frameworks for understanding the distinctive modes of inquiry found in physical and human geography.

Class assessment: Two class essays (1500 words each)
Degree assessment: One two-hour examination (2 questions) Exam times
