Archived VersionThe Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study has been formulated as a dynamic online publication in order to provide the most up to date information possible. Tourism, Development and Marketing (U00406)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-3-TOURISM Tourism is now regularly cited as the largest industry in the world. It has become the leading economic sector in many of the less developed countries and has become a major policy instrument in the economic revival of formerly industrialised cities in the developed world. The economic success of tourism has been so great that it now raises major concerns about its impact on the environment and on local communities. The 'traditional' study of geography has left a legacy of spatial analyses of tourism that has concentrated on measuring flows and calibrating events. Thus early tourism studies tended to deal with travel patterns and landscape analysis. However, the economic and social changes that have occurred in the more affluent parts of the world have produced new consumption patterns, and a shift in emphasis from public to private sector provision, that is not captured in traditional analysis. This option will begin with a review of traditional approaches and an evaluation of their shortcomings. In place of these a new geography of tourism will be advanced which emphasises the possibilities for the semiotic construction of place and individual identities. To examine the constituents of tourism and the touristic construction of places.
To student the spatialising effect of tourist behaviour. To evaluate the significance of tourism as an economic development tool. Through an analysis of marketing strategies to appreciate the ways in which tourism is constructed. To analyse some of the mechanisms used in the construction of tourism; notably the importance of heritage in Britain. Assessment Information
