Advanced Process Safety 5 (U00347)

This module will centre round safety analyses of a process, normally using a design project as a basis. The module will be largely taught by guided self-study. Students will identify the key safety issues of their plant and research and apply suitable assessment techniques. The areas of study covered will include index methods of risk assessment, modelling of dispersions, fire or explosion events and the production of overall risk assessments of processes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire the ability:
- to make safety assessments using methods for risk assessment presented in the lectures;
- to present these assessments orally in group seminars;
- to present risk assessments in written summary reports and an extended safety study.

Assessment Information

There are four assessed exercises, each normally worth 25% of the final
mark.

The exercises will normally include an overall risk assessment of a plant,
preparation and presentation of a seminar in a safety related topic and
two exercises on the application of risk and hazard assessment and
quantification techniques.
