Process Modelling and Numerical Methods 5 (U00341)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-5-CHPMM

This course presents a methodology for the modelling of process flowsheets based on the concepts of unit operations and flows in process streams, and introduces methods for solving flowsheet simulation and design problems. The construction of equation-based models is explained and solution methods are presented for systems of nonlinear algebraic equations, which describe steady-state flowsheets. Principal among these is Newton's method and variants, while other methods which can be used in the sequential modular solution approach (unit by unit) are discussed.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Process Systems 2

Subject Areas

Delivery Information

? Normal year taken : 5th year

? Delivery Period : To be arranged/Unknown

? Contact Teaching Time : 3 hour(s) per week for 11 weeks

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:
- solve a small system of nonlinear algebraic equations using software provided for the course, and their own coding in Fortran 90 of equation residuals for the particular problem;
- develop unit operation models for steady-state processes based on material and energy balances and other relevant principles;
- explain how unit operations models can be combined to form a process model;
- describe, explain the mathematical basis, apply and critically assess the suitability of various simulation solution methods in different types of problem.

Assessment Information

Two hour written examination at the end of the semester.
