Applied Process Optimisation 5 (U00340)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EEL-5-CHOPT This course covers the principles of constrained optimisation for large-scale systems such as those which occur in process systems engineering. Successive Quadratic Programming is developed as an effective method for solving the large, highly constrained nonlinear programming problems which are encountered in process flowsheeting. Some discussion of mixed integer programming problems and solution algorithms is given, and there is a brief discussion of applications which are suitable for simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Knowledge of Fortran 90, e.g. from Process Systems 2 and multi-variable Newton, e.g. from Process Modelling and Numerical Methods is desirable but not essential. Students should be able to:
- identify the type of a given optimisation problem; - explain the conditions for a constrained local minimum or maximum and the importance of convexity for global optimisation; - solve a small Quadratic Programming (QP) problem and explain the issues involved in QP solution; - use a nonlinear programming problem to solve small process engineering problems; - describe critically the pros and cons of different mixed integer programming methods, and solve small hand examples; - discuss critically the application of stochastic optimisation to process engineering. Two hour written examination at the end of the semester.
