From the earliest times animals and man have interacted with animals acting as sources of food, power, transport, companionship and sport. Through domestication and farming we have come to be able to control animals in ever more sophisticated ways. This introductory course is designed to give a broad appreciation of the economic and social value of animals to man and to show how a variety of scientific disciplines contribute to our understanding of animals.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course will give students an understanding of the economic and social value of animals and knowledge of the scientific elements that contribute to their nature, function and management. Students will gain experience of how laboratory methods of measuring animal function and controlling their performance. Students will gain experience in writing scientific reports to length and time criteria, in the interpretation of scientific data and the effective use of the scientific literature.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by a combination of in-course work, accounting for 40%, and a formal examination, accounting for 60% of the final mark. In-course work will comprise practical work and associated records and a course essay, each accounting of 20% of the final course mark. The formal degree examination will consist of three sections, each carrying equal weighting, comprising multiple choice, short answer (5 from 8) and an essay (1 from 3).
