Archived VersionThe Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study has been formulated as a dynamic online publication in order to provide the most up to date information possible. Master versions of the Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study incorporating all changes to date are archived twice a year on 1 September and within the first three University working days prior to the start of Semester 2 in January. Please note that some of the data recorded about this course has been amended since the last master version was archived. That version should be consulted to determine the changes made. Functional Genomic Technologies (P02551)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : BIO-P-P02551 Genome sequencing has already revolutionised biology and medicine, but we are still at the early stages of understanding how this sequence is interpreted to produce a functioning biological organism. Just as genomic sequencing would not have been possible without the development of high-throughput sequencers so the quest to understand the functioning of the genome requires the development of a whole new set of technologies. This course is about these emerging technologies and the new challenges and opportunities they present to bioinformatics. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : Students will be required to have a good understanding of data analysis principles. Students should normally have taken Bioinformatics I or have a strong biological background. Subject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Normal year taken : Postgraduate ? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4) ? Contact Teaching Time : 2 hour(s) per week for 10 weeks All of the following classes
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the emerging technologies and how they can be applied to address biological questions. Students will be able to design experiments, interpret and analyse data generated from the key technologies. Students will be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each technology and apply this knowledge when interpreting and analysing data
Assessment Information
Written examination will account for 80% and assignments 20%.
