Analogue circuit design (P02522)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-P-PGANA

Though being able to carry out analogue design on an integrated circuit is an enormously useful skill, more engineers do analogue design work using integrated circuits than on integrated circuits. This module covers the design of small analogue systems that may be part of an IC, or may be built on a PCB. Topics to be covered will include:
Active filter design. Every analogue signal must be conditioned before it is digitised and at the very least this will require a low-pass filter. Often other filter characteristics may be used to minimise noise, remove interfering signals, supply gain and offsets, etc.
Oscillators. Oscillators are often a key part of an analogue system and can make or break its performance. Initially oscillators that obey Barkhausen’s criterion will be developed, and then we will move on to “waveform generators”, which produce non-sinusoidal outputs.
Voltage and current references are small analogue circuits that are often neglected in a large system. However, if they do not work correctly the whole system fails. This module will discuss how to design good, reliable, references.
Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs) are to be found in a huge number of both analogue and digital systems these days. At first they seem simple enough, but making high performance PLLs is not easy. Some useful schemes for making effective PLLs will be discussed here.
