Applied Surgical Pathology (P02400)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : MED-P-MED

This course will introduce the student to pathology relevant to surgical practice in general. The course will be based on a recognised syllabus submitted to the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board by the nine surgical specialties. The aim will be to ensure that candidates have an understanding of general pathology including surgical microbiology and haematology. This will involve a sound working knowledge of the pathological principles of inflammation, infection, neoplasia and immunity and will require knowledge of applied histology relating to common surgical diseases. On completion of the module the candidate will be able to use the output of the hospital laboratory in an intelligent and informed way and understand the epidemiology of disease and the place of screening in surgical practice.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : None other than the programme entry requirements

? Co-requisites : All students registered on the MSc/Dip/Cert in Surgical Sciences MUST do this core course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : All courses will be delivered taught by distance learning, using a purpose-built delivery platform which acts as a course intranet. Registered students are provided with a user name and password that allows them to access this course intranet. The intranet provides a variety of educational material and supports a range of approaches by the students to the material provided. Online delivery will be supported through the provision of interactive multimedia tutorials and discussions with peers and tutors based around case scenarios and virtual patients. The intranet will also house a number of interactive tutorials that allow students to work with information in a self-paced manner to test their understanding of important concepts and principles. Study guides with lecture notes are available. A CD ROM of the course readings is mailed to each student at the beginning of the year.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The programme aims to ensure that the candidate has a sound understanding of pathology as applied to general surgical practice and that will underpin surgical training across the broad range of surgical specialties in the early years of their clinical experience.

Assessment Information

All three core courses in Year 1 are assessed during each module by participation in online discussion, multiple choice questioning and extended item matching questions. An end of year MCQ based examination will be employed to ensure integration of the applied basic sciences into surgical practice in general. Key principles that will underpin assessment activities are evidence-based practice and the application of theory to clinical practice. The principle of constructive alignment will underpin all assessments. This will ensure the assessment tasks are aligned with the specific course objectives, the content of the course and the teaching methods employed.
