Integrated Resource Planning (P02393)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : GEO-P-IRP

This course focuses on a range of planning tools appropriate for use with natural resources, particularly at the macro level. Well established techniques, based on cost benefit analysis, are used for assessing resource provision decisions. More sophisticated optimisation and simulation techniques are employed for resource use determination. The course features two real life cases which provide students with the opportunities for exploring the use of these techniques in practice.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be expected to be able to:

1) appreciate the types of planning techniques necessary for effective resource management
2) carry out modified cost benefit analysis with attendant modifications to incorporate sensitivity, inflation and risk
3) construct optimisation matrices and run simple programming models including sensitivity and robustness testing
4) appreciate the use of simulation models used for land use planning at EU level
5) experience the construction and use of simple bio-economic models for planning purposes
6) incorporate multi-objective criteria into the planning process
7) appreciate the advantages and difficulties of applying planning techniques in a practical context
8) understand the managerial challenges associated with resource provision and resource use in practice.
9) develop computer skills appropriate to natural resource planning
10) enhance their investigative, analytical and communication skills through problem solving cases
