To increase the knowledge and skills relating to the assessment, selection and treatment planning of patients presenting for treatment under sedation and to emphasise the importance of refusing or referring unsuitable patients. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : -Successful completion of a Registerable Dental Qualification -The completion of two years postgraduate practice of dentistry -Successful completion of Conscious Sedation 1 (or accredited prior learning) -Submission of a curriculum vitae indicating that CPD is being maintained -Successful outcome at a selection interview (optional) ? Co-requisites : General Dental Council registration Employment as a general Dental Practitioner Medical Indemnity cover ? The acquisition and understanding of knowledge relevant to the practice of conscious sedation in dentistry for patients with special sedation needs.To be clinically competent in the:
-Assessment ant treatment planning of patients with special sedation needs. Administration of conscious sedation for dentistry using: -a single titrated dose of intravenous midazolam in special needs patients -intravenous midazolam for protracted dental procedures Clinical and electromechanical monitoring of the patient with special sedation needs.The appropriate provision of dental care for the patient with special sedation needs. Appropriate discharge of patients with special sedation needs. To promote an awareness and understanding of the importance of conscious sedation in the management of pin and anxiety for patients with special sedation needs To appreciate the scope and limitations of the sedation techniques included in this module To promote a critical and caring approach to the management of the anxious dental patient. 70% = Satisfactory completion of supervised clinical practice
