Computational Modelling and Approximation in Structural Mechanics (P01302)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EEL-P-CVCMA Review of 2D/3D frame structures - matrix structural analysis; assembly and solution of equations; introduction of approximation via simple 1D model; singular problems; boundary conditions. Stress and strain tensor; linear elastic material law; continuum idealisations (plane stress, plane strain, axisymmetry, plates & shells); Introduction to different finite elements; boundary conditions and loading; modelling guidelines; convergence of solutions; checking of results. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : First degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or Physics) with adequate structural engineering content. Review of Matrix Structural Analysis for 2D frames.
To introduce students to the concept of approximation. To introduce students to the Finite Element Method, with specific emphasis on its application to frames and planar linear elastic problems. To give modelling guidelines with respect to discretisation, boundary conditions, loading, checking of results etc. Assessment Information
