GIS in the Field (P01240)

The course is comprised of a series of seminars from invited speaker drawn from National Mapping Agencies, consultancies, politicians and researchers associated with the field of geographic information. The students will explore a variety of debates relating to the GI profession, and gain a clear sense of career opportunities in geographic information science.

Students will attend a 3 day fieldcourse held at Kindrgoan during which time team led projects will be undertaken.

Field based technical sessions will be undertaken prior to the fieldcourse. Practical knowledge of field surveying techniques will be an essential prerequisite of the Field trip.

The EEO seminar series is an integral part of the GIS in the field course. Students should plan on attending all seminars.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : Students need to be able to attend the Field Work weekend held at the Kindrogan Field Centre. It is held the weekend between block 1 and 2 is Semester 1.

? Additional Class Information : The Lectures from 14.00 - 16.00 run during block one only.

The Seminars from 16.00 - 18.00 run during blocks one and two.

The Field work weekend is held in the weekend between blocks one and two.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students should have achieved and demonstrated, or be able to achieve and demonstrate, the ability to:
-Through staff-led teaching and student-led project work, acquire a set of skills relating to problem-solving and the use of field equipment in the acquisition, management and presentation of geographic information.
-Understand research and business career opportunities in the field of GI, understand the merits and limitations of each.
-locate, read and summarise relevant literature, from both traditional and electronic media, to extend your understanding of the topic
-develop reasoned arguments, firmly grounded in the available literature
-develop communication and interactive skills through groupwork
-plan and write assignments, within the specified parameters and to a professional standard
-take responsibility for your own learning through reading and the preparation of assignments, and reflect upon your learning experience

Assessment Information

100% Coursework including project undertaken during field work weekend.
