Appraisal in a Clinical Context (P00991)

This course will develop participant's skills in appraisal in both undergraduate and postgraduate settings.

It will review the importance of the teacher as a role model and will examine the following areas:
- Overview of the purpose of appraisal
- The notions of 'personal' and 'professional' development within medical education.
- The difference between management, performance, peer and educational appraisal
- Planning a performance appraisal & deriving sources of information
- Reviewing issues around under performance and ill health in medical practice
- Identifying sources of information relevant to defining a doctors continuing performance
- Critically reviewing present processes of performance and management appraisal
- Providing feedback in a simulated setting to a doctor who has had his performance identified as a cause for concern
- Defining the limits of appraisal
- Reviewing a national appraisal process (GP Appraisal in Scotland)
- Active use of the 360 degree feedback tools including Ramsay Questionnaire, Patient Enablement Scores and other tools allowing feedback on individuals performance.
- Student self appraisal and peer appraisal

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to:
- Apply differing types of appraisal process at undergraduate and post graduate phases
- Recognise the uses and limitations of appraisal in a clinical context
- Conduct a performance appraisal
- Conduct a peer appraisal
- Manage the appraisal process and outcomes
- Demonstrate skills in providing feedback particularly to non-progressing students or trainees
- Explain the role of appraisal in under performance
- Reflect on their own clinical practice based upon peer and patient feedback
- Comment critically on an existing appraisal process in the NHS

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by one piece of coursework. This will amount to 100% of the assessment. Students will be asked to produce a personal education plan with an element of feedback on performance indicators including patient appraisal, peer appraisal, 360 degree feedback.
