Teaching and Learning in a Clinical Context (P00990)

This module will review the issues around teaching both Students and trainee doctors in a clinical environment. It will review the importance of the teacher as a role model and will examine the following questions:
- How does one teach clinical medicine?
- What skills and attributes are required of a good teacher?
- How are these defined and appraised?
- How should we create and assess a suitable teaching environment?
- How should we accredit teachers in medicine?
- What is the theoretical under-pinning for teaching and learning in a clinical context?
- How do we move from educational theory into applying this in clinical practice?
- How do students and trainees acquire knowledge? What are the influences on their training both positive and negative?
- How do we maintain a balance within educational activity and service need in clinical practice and are they necessarily mutually exclusive?
- How best do we teach basic clinical skills? How do we teach higher skills (professional attributes including empathy and sensitivity).
- What do we mean by professional values and how do we allow students to acquire these and how do we make judgements regarding their position.
- How do we deliver teaching?
- The module will explore one-to-one group teaching, lecture based and what are the limits and value of each?

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to:
- Discuss the theoretical concepts teaching and learning
- Assess the needs of the learner
- Explain the concepts of the learning environment and it's influence on learners
- Plan learning for different kinds of learners
- Define the attributes of good teaching
- Elucidate and define the professional responsibilities of a teacher
- Define how they will maintain their teaching performance
- Reflect on the practice of teaching both the learners and the teacher
Enhance their teaching skills through one-to-one teaching, running a group or providing a short talk.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by one piece of coursework. This will amount to 100% of the assessment. Students will be asked to design a teaching module that has direct applicability to their clinical context.
