This course will focus on the pedagogic issues about teaching and learning. More specifically it will consider the importance of:
- Aims, goals and leaning outcomes, behavioural objectives, competences.
- Psychological aspects of learning; learning styles; approaches to learning; learning cycles; learning inventory; holist and serial learning.
- Philosophy of Medical Education: Popper and Kant
- Study skills: acquiring and using information
- The roles of the teacher: enabler, facilitator, mentor, didactic, trainer, chairman, dictator, inquisitor, culture-custodian and the legacy of Socrates
- Strategies for learning and teaching: lectures; problem-based learning; negotiated learning contracts; self-directed learning; clinical and other professional skills.
- Impact of E-learning
- Areas of intelligence, including intelligence quotient and emotional intelligence
- The notion of the novice/expert shift

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student will be able to select and apply a range of teaching strategies appropriate for teaching individuals, small and large groups.

The student will be able to promote 'learning' through selection and application of a number of learning strategies in both undergraduate and postgraduate phases (including some e-learning techniques).

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by one piece of coursework. This will amount to 100% of the assessment. The student will complete a piece of reflective writing about an example of their own teaching. This must reflect a theoretical base, and have a clear evidence of student evaluation and peer observation.
