Signal Processing with MATLAB (P00575)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-P-PGSPM

The course will teach students to solve simple problems in the areas of communications and digital signal processing in a MATLAB environment. The course will offer insight and reinforcement to the taught Signal Processing courses and preparation for the project phase by providing practical experience of implementing signal processing techniques. Sufficient background teaching will be given to enable students who have not specialised in communications or in digital signal processing to attempt the exercises in this course.

Contents:

Basic introduction to using MATLAB

Generating time domain signals, taking FFTs, creating plots

The DFT, its properties and implementation.

Classical and modern (i.e. Auto-Regressive) power spectral estimation

Generating and analysing random variables (mean, variance, histogram, etc)

Stochastic processes and noise

2 course assignments - example exercises could be: an adaptive noise cancellation problem, estimating frequencies and noise power in a time domain signal, etc.

? Keywords : Signal Processing, Communications

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Prior attendance of basic courses in "Communications" and "Signals and Systems" is recommended.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Understanding of how to use MATAB including the MATLAB on-line help facilities.

2. Understanding of how to perform some or all the work of a typical MSc project in MATLAB. This includes an understanding of how to translate complex signal processing algorithms into MATLAB.

Assessment Information

This will be assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, attendance and inspection of lab books.
