Sustainable Energy: Principles and Processes 5 (P00417)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EEL-P-PGSUS This course aims to establish a basic understanding of global patterns of energy use and systems of energy supply, in the context of their sustainability: social, environmental and economic. It is structured so as to familiarise students with the wide range of literature on sustainability, and aims to develop independent study, analysis and presentation skills. Each topic is introduced in a lecture. Students are then assigned sub-topics for self-study and these are presented by the students at discussion workshops the following week. Written assignments and reports will also be required. 1. Global energy use: distribution, growth, patterns of demand.
2. Sectoral analysis of energy use: agriculture, transport, heating, airconditioning. 3. Sustainability and equity. 4. Global energy supply: sources and resources. 5. Sustainable energy sources: renewable, carbon-free, carbon-neutral. 6. Alternative fuels and feedstocks: hydrogen, methanol, syngas. 7. Constraints on expansion of supply: (i) geopolitical factors. 8. Constraints on expansion of supply: (ii) economic - investment, returns, timescales. 9. Constraints on expansion of supply: (iii) environmental - greenhouse gas emissions; mining and landfilling. 10. Energy-related investment in developing countries: the Clean Development Mechanism. 11.
