Dissertation (HPC) (P00363)

The dissertation comprises a report of c.15000 words describing a 16-week project applying the practical HPC skills and knowledge developed from the taught courses. Students are also required to present their work as a seminar to the department.

The dissertation must be based on original work carried out solely by the candidate and conform to the University's regulations. The project work may be undertaken within the School of Physics or in an external organisation. The subject area covered by the project can, with the approval of the Programme Director, be chosen by the candidate to align with their own research interests.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The dissertation allows students to demonstrate their ability to organise and carry out a major piece of work according to sound scientific principals. The types of activity involved in each project will vary but on completion of the dissertation students should be able to:

- Research the literature and gather background information.
- Analyse requirements, compare alternatives and specify a solution.
- Design and implement the solution.
- Experiment and evaluate the solution.
- Demonstrate written and oral presentation skills.
