State and Society in Fascist Italy (IT0022)

This course looks at the political and social history of Fascist Italy, one of the most fascinating and turbulent periods of modern Italian history which has given rise to a rich, interesting and often highly politicised historiography.

The course concentrates in particular on:

the causes of the rise of fascism;

social change during the period of the regime;

political mobilisation, the quest for consensus and the limits to consensus;

government policy in a number of areas including labour relations, the church, foreign affairs, gender, race and demography

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course aims:
- to increase students' understanding of the nature of the Fascist experience in Italy.
- to increase their organisational, critical and communication skills;
-to improve their writing and research skills.
