Microorganisms, Cells and Immunity 2 (BI0010)

Organisation, growth and interactions of bacterial cells. Interactions of microorganisms with higher organisms. Viruses, viral transformation and oncogenesis. Cell interactions in multicellular organisms: cell diversity, differentiation and growth; tissue organisation and cell communication. Organisation of the mammalian immune system. Innate and acquired immunity. Antibodies. Applications of microbial and immunological techniques.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Molecules and Cells 1 is recommended, as is prior attendance at The Dynamic Cell 2.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Basic knowledge of the biology of bacteria, viruses and fungi, mammalian tissue orgainisation, and the mammalian immune system.

Assessment Information

1 essay, 1 lab report, 1 literature comprehension test. In-course assessment 50%; exam 50%.
