Analytical Chemistry Level 10 (U01210)

A lecture course covering instruction in both the theory and application of specific techniques in analytical chemistry, as well as instruction in the general principles of sampling and analysis and statistical presentation and manipulation of data. The course comprises individual lecture courses on: Principles of Sampling and Analysis, Statistics and Data Handling for Analytical Chemistry, Atmospheric Analysis, Chromatography, Plasma Emission and Mass Spectrometry, and Radioanalytical Methods. Either the Level 10 or Level 11 version of this course (as specified in the degree programme tables) is a compulsory requirement for Year 4/5 students on degrees in Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry, but can be taken by Year 4/5 students on any Chemistry degree programme.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Chemistry 3A (CHE-3-A) and Chemistry 3B (CHE-3-B) at a weighted average at or above Grade D at the first attempt, and Chemistry 3P Practical and Transferable Skills (CHE-3-Pract), and Mathematics qualifications of at least 20 credits to level Applicable Mathematics 1 and Mathematical Methods 1; or with the permission of Head of School.

? Prohibited combinations : Analytical Chemistry Level 11 (CHE-4-Analyt11).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:
- discuss the relative merits of different strategies for sampling
- establish quality assurance procedures in support of an analytical measurement
- construct appropriate calibration curves and undertake other statistical procedures to extract quantitative information from a measurement
- understand and apply basic parametric and non-parametric significance tests on data
- understand, apply and interpret appropriate chromatographic technique for an analysis involving separation
- understand, apply and interpret modern elemental emission techniques, including where appropriate determination of isotopic elemental composition
- understand, apply and interpret appropriate techniques for separation and quantification of radionuclides
- rationalise the advantages and disadvantages of a range of atmospheric analysis techniques
- undertake numerical calculations of atmospheric composition or other atmospheric parameters from appropriate laboratory data
