At the end of the course, students should be able to:
(i) Describe and explain the fundamental principles of quantum theory, chemical bonding, atomic, rotational, infrared, and NMR spectroscopies, chemical thermodynamics, and ionic solution chemistry. (ii) Describe and explain the trends and patterns of structures, physical properties and reactivities of selected main group compounds. (iii) Use their knowledge to explain observations and solve problems associated with the material covered in the course. (iv) Use laboratory equipment in a safe manner in order to measure physical quantities, and to interpret and analyse the results. (v) Write clear, succinct laboratory reports that take due account of errors and uncertainties. Assessment Information
75% degree examination (1 paper of 2.5 hours, 1 paper of 1 hour) + 25% practical mark.
