A survey of twentieth-century Chinese literature in translation, through selected readings on topics such as the emancipation of women, revolution in the countryside, youth and age, sex and love, literature and disent and literature and power.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to develop insights into one of the world's major civilisations in its modern transformations; to develop an understanding of 20th-century China through one of its chief modes of expression, formal written literature in a self-consicously modern mode; to develop skills in the appreciation and analysis of literary works within the limitations imposed by translation; to develop the communicative skills of writing and discussion.

Assessment Information

one essay (c 2500 words)(50%); 1 class exam (50%).
