Environmental Geoscience Fieldwork and Synoptic Practical Examination (U03526)

This 20 Unit course has two components:

1. Marine Techniques and Processes Course: Five days' field work at Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory at the start of summer, end of the 3rd year.

The trip is designed to provide hands-on experience with water and sediment sampling methods, and bathymetric and hydrographic survey techniques, commonly used in coastal oceanography. Water and sediment samples are subsequently analysed for a variety of parameters and, together with bathymetric and hydrographic data, are used to provide insights on the physical and biogeochemical processes occurring in Loch Etive.

Assessment for this component is based on a report due by Monday of Week 2, Semester 1. Course Organiser: Greg Cowie.

2. Synoptic practical examination
These are two 2-hour synoptic practical examinations which will call on all the information and knowledge Environmental students have gained during the final two years of their degree. There are two components:

a) a marine practical. Exam Organiser: Mary Elliot
b) a terrestrial practical. Exam Organiser: Bryne Ngwenya

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Quaternary Environmental Change, Aquatic Systems, and Environmental Techniques and application (Oban); and Earth Surface Processes and Applied Environmental Geochemistry (Synoptic Practical Exam)

? Costs : £30 contribution to the Oban fieldtrip.
