Introductory Pathology and Infectious Disease (U03448)

This course deals with basic mechanisms of disease and introductory pathology. General cellular pathology, inflammation and immunology will be taught using a combination of lectures and case studies. This will be followed by instruction on the biology of infectious agents, and the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis. The course includes laboratory methods for diagnosis of diseases and practical instruction is given in appropriate laboratory techniques. This course integrates with the population medicine and veterinary public health course below and is shared in part with BVM&S second year students.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students should be able to:
Describe and comprehend the important features and mechanisms of the general pathological processes and understand how these produce disease and clinical signs.
Define and use specialist terminology applied to infectious diseases and the host-pathogen interactions.
Comprehend the environmental, pathogen and host factors involved in the transmission, establishment, persistence, and control of infection.
Describe the pathogenic processes at cellular and molecular levels of specific viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of animals.
Correlate causal organisms and mechanisms with resultant pathological alterations, lesions and clinical disease.

Assessment Information

In course assessment: One practical write-up (5%)
The end of year Degree Examination contributes the remaining 95% of the total mark and consists of 2 written papers each of 2.5 hours duration and a practical paper of 1 hour duration.
