The course will cover the development of Zionist thought and the events leading to the foundation of the State of Israel, various aspects of Israeli culture (language, literature, religion), and current Israeli political problems.

? Pre-requisites : Judaism 2 recommended, or consent of course manager.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. a general understanding of the problems faced by the Jewish people at the beginning of the modern era and why Zionism arose as one possible solution.
2. A particular knowledge of the way in which the Zionist movement was organised and how it eventually succeeded in founding the state of Israel.
3. An understanding of the various ideological trends within the State of Israel and especially the role of religion within the State.
4. a general knowledge of the role played in the establishment of the State by the revival of the Hebrew language and the literature based on it.
5. an awareness of the complexities of the Israeli-Arab conflict and a sympathetic understanding of the positions of both sides in the dispute.
6. improved their skills at essay writing, presenting seminar papers and verbal debate, and critical appreciation of the visual media.

Assessment Information

10% on seminar presentations and participation, 30% on an essay, 60% on degree examination.
