Visual Cognition (VS1) (U03323)

This course examines how human observers create, store, and employ representations of objects and scenes. The overarching theme of the course is that humans are active perceivers of the world rather than passive recipients of visual information. From this vantage point, the course explores the processes that underlie visual selection, eye movement control, the deployment of attention, and memory for objects and scenes.

The course consists of five 2-hr lectures. Lectures are designed to provide students with a working understanding of the key literature in the area of visual cognition and to provide students with a forum for debate and discussion. Final assessment will be by means of an essay examination.

? This course is only available to part year visiting students.

? This course is a variant of the following course : U03130

? Pre-requisites : Degree major in Psychology and passes in psychology courses at least to the equivalent of junior honours level in Edinburgh. Prior agreement with the 4th Year Honours Course Organiser: Dr. Martha Whiteman (Ext. 50 3317).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course students should

a) be aware of the major topics of inquiry in the field of visual cognition
b) understand how experimentation is carried out in the field of visual cognition and how results of experiments can bear on theory
c) be able to intelligently discuss the state-of-the science in the area of visual cognition.

Assessment Information

Long essay (3,000 words) to be set by the course organiser and due Friday 5pm Week 13, Semester 1.
