The course seeks to consolidate and extend the students understanding of social work by building on earlier courses and the students' practice learning. It is designed to develop understanding of selected concepts and theories from moral and political philosophy and to apply these to the analysis of key issues in the professional ethics of social work.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

1. The complex relationships between justice, care and control in social welfare and community justice and their practical and ethical effects and implications; The complex relationships between justice, care and control in social welfare and community justice and their practical and ethical effects and implications;
2. The nature, historical development and application of social work values and codes of practice;
3. Aspects of philosophical ethics that are relevant to understanding and attempting to resolve value dilemmas and conflicts in both inter-personal and professional contexts;
4. Links between the content of different codes defining ethical practice and the regulation of professional conduct;
5. The concepts of rights, responsibility, freedom, authority and power associated with the practice of social workers as moral and statutory agents;
6. The effective management of potential conflicts created by codes and values held by different professional groups.
