The Masters of Suspicion 3/4 (U03019)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : DIV-3-DIV-3-SUS Religion is a social construct and its deconstruction began in the 19th century with Feuerbach. He influenced the criticism of religion by the 'masters of suspicion' (Ricoeur), Marx, Nietzsche and Freud. The course examines each of the four writers in turn, their critiques of religion and their alternatives to it. Entry Requirements? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students successfully completing the course will be able to:
(1) understand the processes governing the construction of social institutions and individual identities; (2) undertake for themselves the corresponding process of deconstruction; (3) evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of different types of criticisms of religion; (4) recognise and assess alternative systems bearing family resemblances to religion.
