Cells, Tissues and Development (U02880)? Credit Points : 30 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : VET-1-CTD This course in cell biology looks within the cell at the molecular machinery and beyond the cell at the interactions which form the basic tissues and govern cell behaviour and differentiation. The description of normal cellular function provides a foundation for understanding how defects may give rise to pathologies and clinical conditions. Specific topics include: the basic tissues, the macromolecules of the cell, the management and flow of genetic information, cell division and its control, cellular pathology, embryology up to organogenesis, aspects of cellular and membrane physiology and molecular genetics. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. Subject AreasHome subject areaBVMS, (Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Schedule S) Delivery Information? Normal year taken : 1st year ? Delivery Period : Full Year (Blocks 1-4) ? Contact Teaching Time : 6 hour(s) 30 minutes per week for 24 weeks All of the following classes
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. Explain how the genetic information of the cell is replicated and how the information is used in the synthesis of proteins;
2. Describe the nature and function of proteins and the activity and assay of enzymes; 3. Apply molecular explanations to important physiological processes; 4. Classify and identify the basic tissues and their relationships with one another; 5. Integrate detailed knowledge of particular processes to provide a unified view of cellular, tissue and body function; 6. Describe the early stages of embryological development and organogenesis; 7. Understand how the malfunctioning of normal processes can cause cellular pathologies. Assessment Information
Coursework (20% of final mark) comprising 4 practical reports and histology drawing book (10%), group investigative assignment (5%) and class examination (5%). The end of year Degree Examination contributes 80% to the final mark and comprises an essay paper (40%), a problem solving and short questions paper (30%) and a Histology 'spot' paper (10%).
