Debates in Geography (U02866)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 9 ? Acronym : GEO-3-DG This course examines a variety of styles of geographical thinking, giving special attention both to the discipline's distinctive epistemological and methodological frameworks, as well as their links to other cognate disciplines. Specific attention is given to key debates and key analytical concepts in the discipline, such that the link between current and past styles of geographical inquiry is illuminated. The course also details the ways in which geography assists in the articulation of current research questions in the natural and social sciences more generally. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course has the following learning outcomes: to provide students with a grounding in recent philosophical and methodological issues in physical and human geography; to familiarise students with influential debates and central concepts in both the physical and social sciences; to equip students with an understanding of the relationship between epistemology and methodology in geographical research; to raise awareness of the questions of research procedure in the formulation of geographical knowledge such that students are aware of these in relation to their own independent research efforts.
Assessment Information
Class assessment: Two class essays (2000 words each)
Degree assessment: One two-hour examination (2 questions) Exam times
