This course is based on works translated into English. Subjects covered include the Qur'an, its history and content, and an introduction to the nature and teachings of the Hadith. A grounding is given in Sunni and Shia ideas, along with Sufi and other popular practices. Aspects of legal discussion, devotion and contemporary Muslim debates are addressed.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Islamic History 1, or evidence of qualifications considered satisfactory by the lecturer in charge of the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:
understand the background and rise of Islam in its historical setting
possess familiarity with selected Quran and Hadith texts
understand the principles behind the formation and role of Islamic law
understand a range of classical and modern Muslim perspectives on selected
themes

Assessment Information

Examination: two 2 hour exams (60%)
Coursework: two essays of 2000 words (40%)

Exemption from Spring exam for those with 60% and above.
