The Old North: Arthur's People and the English 350-750 (U02508)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCL-3-OLDNOR The principal objective of the course will be to explore the nature, clashes and coalescences of ethnicity, society and culture among the British and English peoples of northern Britain in the Early Christian period. Particular aims will be coming to terms with the historical value of the elegies of Y Gododdin, a compilation of verses associated with the peoples in question, and the enigmatic figure of Arthur, the earliest mention of whom occurs in this text. The region under investigation has received an uncommonly high level of archaeological attention in recent years, and the course content will endeavour at all times to remain as close to the cutting edge of current research as possible. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students will have acquired experience of evaluating critically different types of primary evidence, and will have reflected upon different strategies and methodologies that are employed in interpreting this material. They will have been encouraged to think outside the traditional boundaries of historical studies to consider the support available from other disciplines, and in so doing will have developed an awareness of the complex nature of 'Dark Age' studies.
In addition, through presentations and seminar discussion, students will have further developed their skills in presenting their ideas in a critical environment. Assessment Information
Students will be required to submit one individual essay of 3000 words to be handed in on the last Monday of the semester. Students will also sit a two-hour Degree Examination in the May diet. The essay will count as 33% of the final grade; the exam as 67%. The Course Organiser will keep regular consultation hours; individual interviews/tutorials will be made available to students as required. The external examiner of Scottish History will include this course in their responsibilities.
