This course covers the history of Scotland in outline from c.500 to the Renaissance. It covers the making of the Scottish kingdom and its development in the medieval period up to the start of the sixteenth century. The wider themes and forces that shaped the history of the kingdom are presented in an innovative and challenging way.

An awareness of the key events in Scottish history prior to c.1500.

An ability to read secondary sources in a critical manner.

An initial awareness of the value of selected primary source material.

The production of properly referenced and analytical text.

3 essays (one of which must be a primary source analysis) each being one-third of the overall mark.
