Selections from the texts will be studied and analysed in detail and interpreted in their literary and historical contexts. Entry Requirements? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will: have read substantial parts of Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics in Latin, and the remainder in translation; have a thorough knowledge of the content of the texts; have a good knowledge of the language and style of the author; be acquainted with the social and political background of Virgil's early poetry; be familiar with elements of patronage and the production of literature in late Republican Rome; have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of Greek and Latin pastoral poetry; have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of Greek and Latin didactic poetry; be aware of various modes of representing thoughts formulated in the context of one language and culture through the medium of another language in a different cultural context.
Assessment Information
Coursework - 30%; one take-home examination - 70%.
