Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is intended: to introduce students to some important historical controversies, including those relating to the origins of the war and to military leadership; during it; to promote an understanding of the inter-relation of war and social change; and to examine how war was represented in
literary and visual terms. There is a particular emphasis on the way in which films have portrayed the experience of the war.
Seminar teaching will develop oral skills, with individual presentations and general discussion based on advance reading and/or historical documents. The essays will develop the ability of students to work independently on a substantial body of material, and their general powers of criticism, analysis, and argument. The examination serves to consolidate the work of the course and tests students' knowledge, understanding and essay-writing skills under controlled conditions.
