Hellenistic Poetry (U02233)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCL-3-HELPOET The aim of this course is to study Hellenistic Poetry by examining the works of the period's three major poets: Callimachus, Apollonius and Theocritus. Particular attention is paid to literary innovations and the interpretive issues that arise from them. Entry Requirements? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will:
- have read one book of Apollonius' Argonautica, the 6 Hymns of Callimachus, selected examples of Callimachus' work in other genres, selected Idylls of Theocritus, and selected epigrams in Greek; and the whole of Apollonius' 'Argonautica' in English; - have a thorough knowledge of the content of the works read; - have a good knowledge of the language and style of the three authors; - have a good understanding of the literary innovations, conventions, and characteristics of Hellenistic Poetry; - have developed awareness of the interpretive problems raised by hellenistic literary practices and modern critical approaches to those problems; - have developed skills in close reading of original texts. One essay - 30%; one (2-hour) degree examination - 70%.
