Mineral Behaviour (U02142)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : GEO-3-BEHAV

The course will commence with basic considerations of atomic structure and mineral composition as applied to sulphide and most particularly silicate minerals. The interplay of equilibrium and kinetics will be introduced by consideration of the simple system of the aluminosilicate polymorphs. Weeks 4 to 6 will be devoted to becoming familiar with modern-day tools of microanalysis (electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope and ion microprobe) and their application to mineral studies. In weeks 7 to 10 the feldspare minerals will be largely used to illustrate further kinetic aspects of mineral behaviour and transformations including exsolution.
