Environmental Politics in Europe (U02137)

This course examines environmental politics and policies in Europe, with particular emphasis on the European Union (EU). Following an introduction to key concepts and different approaches for understanding environmental politics, the course explores key actors (including parties, NGOs, government officials, business) and dynamics shaping national environmental policy and politics. The knowledge of national differences will be the base from which to study the EU's unique role in shaping national and international environmental policy.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course seeks to:
- promote an understanding of the key debates and concepts surrounding environmental politics in Europe;
- raise awareness of the key features of European environmental politics on the domestic, EU and international level;
- enable students to assess and apply contending approaches to understanding environmental politics;
- encourage students to come to an informed view about current issues and developments in European environmental policy and politics.
