Gene Expression and Microbial Regulation (U02014)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : BIO-4-BTgemr

The aim of these lectures is to familiarise students with the variety of mechanisms responsible for regulating the expression of genetic information at the level of transcription and post-transcription mechanisms. This will cover both prokaryotes and eukaryotes with an introduction to RNA splicing. Genetic regulation in prokaryotes is discussed with respect to sigma factors, two component protein regulators and how this relates to microbial physiology. The second half of the course deals with the principles and applications of microbial regulation in biotechnology. Topics include protein secretion in pathogenesis, protein expression systems in biotechnology and the problems of antimicrobial resistance.
