Chemical Engineering Research Projects (2004/05) 5 (U02011)? Credit Points : 50 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EEL-5-CHR05 The research project and literature review in chemical engineering are undertaken by MEng students in their final year. They consist of original research and a review of the literature into techniques or phenomena in chemical engineering or a related discipline. In many cases they can lead to worthwhile, publishable results. Research projects range from the purely experimental to entirely computational, with many having a mixture of both elements. The projects have four elements: 1. A comprehensive literature review. 2. A major experimental or computational project. 3. Communication skills training. Entry Requirements? Students will gain experience in the methods and practice of research. Communications skills are developed, orally and in writing and with the aid where appropriate of electronic media. In addition students will gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of their particular research area. The project report provides the student with the challenge of writing an extended technical report, in which they are expected to discuss in detail the background to the project, the methods used and the results they obtained; and to give a critical evaluation of their work in the context of other researchers' activities.
Assessment Information
Students will be assessed on the three elements identified in the project description, mainly by means of project reports, with a contribution from the supervisors' assessment of the project performance. The overall contribution of this course to the year's assessment is 30% (36 points out of 120) with the distribution of weightings for the individual components as follows:
