General Practice and Geriatric Medicine (U01938)

General Practice: The four week attachment focuses on patient management in the community and at the hospital/community interface. Each student will be supported individually by a General Practice Tutor and other primary healthcare team members, and also benefit from case-based tutorial and project work. Geriatric Medicine: Four weeks of instruction with full-time attachment to a geriatric unit. Electives for students wishing to pursue a deeper interest in care of the elderly can be provided.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To acquire the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to diagnose and manage patients in General Practice, in an effective and holistic manner.
To familiarise students with the clinical management of the frailest and most disabled elderly patients, with complex and/or multiple disability.

Assessment Information

There are 2 components to the assessment in general practice - Assessment by Practice Tutor (50%). This will consist of a standardised assessment of the attitudes, skills and knowledge you have displayed while at the practice. - A Patient Study, like (but not) a Portfolio case (50%) Along with General Practice, in-course assessment in Geriatric Medicine will contribute 10 of the 40 marks for in-course assessment in Year 5. Elements of assessment are: Portfolio case report, Knowledge test and Tutor PPD/skills assessment. Work on the clinical attachment will be subject to an evaluation - including a component based on the SCEE methodology - which will be carried out by a senior clinician. Material relevant to care of elderly patients will also be examined in the end-of-year 'Assessment for practice' examination.
