Mineralogy and Petrology (U01918)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : GEO-2-MINPET Material of the Earth's crust and mantle: crystallography, optical mineralogy, structure, chemistry and occurrence of minerals; introduction to the petrology and petrography of igneous and metamorphic rocks. The Degree examination will include a written paper and practical work. Additional class tests, assessed practicals, and own-time projects will contribute to the final mark. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Earth Dynamics; Sediments, Time & People. Students with a suitable background established in subjects such as Materials Science or Chemistry may be admitted at the discretion of the Course Organiser. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The intended overall learning outcome of the course is that you should acquire the basic skills needed to identify, describe and interpret igneous and metamorphic rocks, largely through the study of their constituent minerals, and at the same time understand the theoretical basis of those skills.
Assessment Information
Lectures, practicals and project work. Continuous assessment through project work, written-up practical assignments and short class tests. Degree exam in summer diet.
