Sedimentology A (U01850)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : GEO-2-SED

A broad introduction to the study of sedimentary processes, products, environments and facies: sediment classification, sedimentary structures, sediment transport, modern and ancient basins, mud rocks, clastic rocks, methods of investigation, petrography, diagenesis, facies and facies models, stratigraphy, the major sedimentary environments and plate tectonic settings. There will be a week's field course prior to Semester 1, and a local weekend field trip during Semester 1, as arranged. The Degree examination will include a written paper and practical work. An additional class test, assessed exercises, and field work carried out during the year will contribute to the final mark.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Earth Dynamics; Sediments, Time & People. Students with a suitable background established in subjects such as Physical Geography or Soil Science may be admitted at the discretion of the Course Organiser. Some additional reading and practical work may be specified for such students.

? Costs : Part costs of the September fieldtrip to Arran.

Assessment Information

Lectures, practical exercises, class test and field excursions (Arran and October weekend fieldtrip). Practical exercises are taken in class and own-time exercises.
