Mathematical Methods for Geophysicists (U01800)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 9 ? Acronym : GEO-3-MATH This course is aimed at third-year geophysics, geology, and GPG students who are interested in using and extending their mathematical skills, and in exploring the insights that can be developed through quantitative modelling of geological processes. It is compulsory for those students who intend to take Geophysics 4. Examples and applications will be drawn from the book "Geodynamics" by Turcotte & Schubert, though the mathematical treatment may be different. Teaching is by means of a series of "workshops", in which short lectures on the underlying mathematical techniques and their geological and geophysical applications are mixed with example classes and computational sessions. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Introduction to Geophysics, Mathematical Methods 4, Applicable Mathematics 4, Physics 2A: Forces, Fields & Potentials. Other students may be admitted at the discretion of the Course Organiser. Some additional reading may be specified for such students. ? Costs : None.
