Igneous Geochemistry (U01780)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-4-IGGEO

This course is run as series of tutorial-type sessions with requisite reading.

The topics to be covered include:

a) Mantle composition, melting processes, melt extraction.
b) Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and mantle evolution.
c) Trace element behaviour during partial melting and fractional crystallisation.
d) Numerical simulation of trace element behaviour.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Chemical Geology, Igneous Petrogenesis.

Subject Areas

Delivery Information

? Normal year taken : 4th year

? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course will give an integrated overview of the geochemical principles underpinning mantle evolution and igneous petrogenesis. It builds on knowledge and understanding gained in Year 3.

Assessment Information

100% continuous assessment based on an Excel-based numerical simulation of the evolution of the Earth’s crust-mantle system. The results of the simulation will be written up in the form of a scientific paper.
