CP Practical and Transferable Skills (U01729)

The course consists of practicals in advanced physical chemistry and training in transferable skills such as oral presentations, writing reports, problem solving and team work. The course forms part of the prescribed third year curriculum for students on degrees in Chemical Physics.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Concurrent or prior attendance at CP Symmetry and Structure (CHE-3-CPSymStr), and CP Molecules and Matter (CHE-3-CPMolMat), and CP Kinetics and Catalysis (CHE-3-CPKinCat)

? Prohibited combinations : Chemistry 3P Practical and Transferable Skills (CHE-3-Pract)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a firm understanding and practical experience of basic experimental techniques used in physical chemistry
- Understand the connection between these experimental techniques and the lecture material presented in CP Symmetry and Structure, CP Kinetics and Catalysis, and CP Molecules and Matter
- Work in a chemical laboratory in a safe and responsible manner, both singly and as part of a team
- Follow a precise set of experimental instructions and present and discuss the results in the form of a clear, concise scientific report
- Use personal computers for the collection, analysis, processing and presentation of quantitative experimental data
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the source of errors in quantitative measurements and the design of experiments to reduce those errors
- Locate and use information in the scientific literature to investigate a scientific topic or to solve a scientific problem and present this information as a detailed written report or summarised in an oral presentation
- Make use of a range of IT applications for the production of coursework in different presentation formats including reports and oral presentations.

Assessment Information

This course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework
