Semiconductor Physics (U01441)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PHY-4-SemiCond This course begins with a review of the properties of Si, Ge and GaAs and takes the theory of intrinsic and extrinsic materials as far as the properties of pn junctions and metal-semiconductor contacts. The basic physics is then used to understand and model the behaviour of semiconductor devices such as bipolar and field-effect transistors, photo-diodes and light emitting diodes. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : At least 70 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q; prior attendance at Condensed Matter Physics (PHY-4-CondMatt). Subject AreasHome subject areaUndergraduate (School of Physics), (School of Physics, Schedule Q) Delivery Information? Normal year taken : 4th year ? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4) ? Contact Teaching Time : 2 hour(s) per week for 11 weeks All of the following classes
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course you should:
1)be familiar with the electronic and conduction properties of both doped and undoped semiconductors 2)have been introduced to the detailed behaviour of the pn junction and how this behaviour determines the operation of semiconductor devices 3)be familiar with the principless of operation of diodes, transistors and optoelectronic devices 4)have been introduced to the fabrication of large scale integrated semicondcutor devices Assessment Information
Degree Examination, 100%
